Don’t Cower: Encouragement to Change Everything

I have been reading articles about the massive success of Uber. I have been so interested in seeing new markets opening up and watching a new stream of intelligent leaders surfacing. It’s invigorating.

There’s an article in particular I want to share.

[From an interview with designer/artist/soul searcher Elle Luna:]

So I was using Uber all the time in San Francisco, even though I hated the design. And then I went to the Crunchies awards ceremony and at a post-ceremony event, where I was in a ball gown, I saw the CEO of Uber, Travis Kalanick, sitting at the bar. I was three whiskeys deep at this point and I walked up to him and said, “I use Uber all the time and I absolutely hate the app. I think you should bring me in to fix it.” He replied, “Oh, yeah? What are the three things you’d fix about it?” I said, “I’d redo the logo, redo the entire app, and change the rating system.” I think there was something about being in a dress that empowered me to say such things (laughing). And do you know what he said? He said, “Be at the Uber office at 9am on Monday.” I told him I couldn’t do it alone and he said he’d have a team for me.

I thought the offer was bogus, but I went to Uber’s office on Monday at 9am, laughing to myself, and Travis led me back to a project room with two other designers—they were from outside of Uber and he had flown them in from New York! We took on the Uber app and redesigned it in three weeks. In fact, one of the guys he flew in from New York, Shalin Amin, ended up staying on full-time. The app is gorgeous and last night it won the Fast Company 2013 Innovation By Design Awards for the transportation category, beating out Mars Rover and Tesla.

Most people want to be fit, most people aren’t.

Most people want to build a successful business, most people won’t.

Most people want to be the best version of themselves, most people aren’t.

Most people have dreams they want to fulfill, most people won’t.

Everyone wants to quit something, build something, be something, do something. Most people won’t.

How many things have we wanted? How many opportunities have we craved? How many broken things have we wanted to fix?

And how many of those have we shrunk from. Hid from. Or, excused away.

We’re not alone.

Most people won’t.

But every once in a while someone puts themselves out there. Makes the leap. Faces rejection or failure or worse. And comes out the other side. Better. Changed. Bolder.

Most people won’t. Which means those that do change everything.

Granted, the woman was already an esteemed individual. Nonetheless, she saw an opportunity to present her (possibly undesired) perspective and didn’t cower. She not only addressed what she saw as a problem, she provided the answer.

I know most people cower too often. Others may be quick to find a complaint, yet never stretch their brains to seek a solution.

Me? I want to change everything.

What about you?

Have you had a great idea, but haven’t given it legs? Do you have goals, but haven’t structured the discipline needed to succeed? Do you want to change something, but let fear and self-doubt cause you to settle?

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

Do not fear. Pray for strength.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,  though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. ‘Selah'” Psalm 46:1-3

Do not fear. Pray for strength.

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:3

Do not fear. Pray for strength.

How do you press on? How do you move forward? What tools have you found to be helpful? Where have you found encouragement?

  1. I find it hard to trust, and often I just pray: God, I don’t believe and I’m not sure and I want you to know it. Thank you for being bigger than my distrust and stronger than my fear and being able to carry it too. Help me to trust and believe.
It’s amazing to have a Father who you can trust, even with your mistrust 🙂

  2. What a bold woman! Truly a great example of letting go of insecurities and just going for it. I struggle with anxiety. Sometimes I think this prevents me from doing things I would otherwise do if not for the anxiety. The verses you provided here help me to be less afraid (sometimes I don’t even know what I’m afraid of) and to rely on God to give me strength!

    • Laura, I’m the same way! I love to sing and am shamefully afraid of singing in front of people. This self-doubt has caused me to shy away from worship! I’m working on this one.
Thank you for stopping by! I loved your post about being all in with God’s plan. What an encouragement!

  3. I wish I could be this assertive. I mean I am at times, but never at the right times.

I try to keep a good circle of friends near that can talk me through when I need a push and just love me and my flaws, pray with and for me when I am going through a hard time; and then sometimes I just have a breakdown ad have to get back up….

Loved this post! Thank you for linking up over at #mondaymotivation!
    Be blessed!

  4. What a wonderful and encouraging post. I’m not as bold as I would like to be. I do cower, underestimate myself, and doubt my abilities. However, God is my strength and he makes me bold in Him.

Boldness is so important, especially when it comes to doing the work that God has called us to do.

Thanks for sharing and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop.

    Wishing you a lovely day.

  5. Great article. I want to change things to and we start with our family. Being bold in doing what God wants us to do with our family and trying to ignore the displeasure that comes from family and friends. Change your family and then your family changes their family and so on. Teach our children to make a stand for God and who knows where God will take them, teach them to trust His will for their lives, that’s making a stand and being bold. Thanks for sharing this great post at Good Morning Mondays. Blessings to you and your family.

    • Absolutely. It’s definitely a difficult task to ignore the comments of family and friends, until we realize God is speaking. What a blessing to hear the voice of God and take that stand! Thank you for a great insight!

  6. I am often encouraged by other Sisters in Christ. None of us are perfect and we all struggle at times. We know Christ is for us, we pray for strength and endurance and discernment. But there is something special about hearing these words from a Sister. That’s what you’ve given me today. I don’t say this lightly.

    Blessings,

    • Deborah, I am so glad these words helped you today! Thank you for letting me know. It is such a blessing to know what’s touched my heart is touching another’s. I hope you have a great day!

  7. Great article! 2 Timothy 1:3 is one of my favorite verses to get me through a tough situation where it is necessary to be bold for God. Also, fear not what man can do for the body… in Romans. Queen Esther is a great example of standing up for the righteous cause and making changes. Thanks for sharing this encouragement on the Art of Home-Making Mondays! 🙂

  8. Hi There! I am coming here from Deb’s blog link-up.
I was just thinking that we can all agree that we are individually called and gifted. But what happens when the call comes, and our gifts are needed? Sometimes, I just run for the hills! It such a silly split in my soul. I know God wants to use all of us. Why not me?

I appreciate your encouragement to not fear. I think it’s great that you felt called to do that. Who knows how many people you will encourage to ‘go tor it’? You can count me as one anyway 🙂

    Nice to meet you today!

    • Nice to meet you, Ceil! Seriously, when the spotlight falls on our gifts, it’s definitely a struggle to want to be so vulnerable and exposed. I’m so glad you felt encouraged by the post, and I’m glad you stopped by!
